* Though standards vary from country to country, according to the FDA, "In order to use the term 'gluten free' on its label a food must meet all the requirements of the definition, including that the food must contain less than 20 ppm (parts per million) gluten." It is said that products with a gluten content below 20 ppm are suitable for people with celiac disease.

  1. Oh my gosh, you are a godsend! Could you test something yummy and dark like Leinenkugels Vanilla Porter or New Belgium 1554, or Kilt lifter? I'm new to the low gluten scene, so I don't know if that's a stupid question... Do all dark beers have a high level of gluten? Thanks for testing and for posting your results! I can live without bread and wheat pasta, but I can't live without beer!!!

    1. There's a reason why Omission and other "gluten reduced" (not GLUTEN FREE) beers say on the fine print of their websites:

      "The gluten content of this product cannot be verified, and this product may contain gluten."

      It's because the test for gluten doesn't work on beer. The results you get are meaningless.

      You have a collection of numbers but that doesn't tell you anything about the gluten content of the beer.

  2. As someone that has known he is celiac for about 5 years and has gone without the great taste of beer I am super happy that you have put this blog out. Now I don't have to always order a cider at the bar when I just feel like a beer. Thank you for your work!

    Also... I concur with Melanie... If there are darker beers like Lagunitas, Pyramid Heff, or even something like Guiness that might fall into the gluten free or low category those would be good to test.

  3. If you were to find the time you would be my absolute hero if you tested Michelob Ultra. I found out last week from my doctor that I have to go gluten free and I was pretty devastated. I'd love to know if this is something I might not have to completely give up. Either way, thank you so much for taking the time to make this list. You guys are amazing!

    1. Yes, please test Michelob Ultra for gluten level.

  4. I concur with everyone above, it's amazing that you guys are doing this! My wife was diagnosed with Narcolepsy/Catalepsy last year and has found that no-gluten has made things 10x better. For everyone interested in gluten-free beer topic, make sure you pick up the April/May issue of Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine, this issue is devoted to Gluten-Free beers and explaining it all, it's a must read! They also list as your list does: Duvel, Corona Extra & Fuller's IPA(hard to find in the States) as being under 20ppm. Keep it up!

  8. There are Gluten free beers (< 20ppm) available in Europe, in Ireland mostly Daura (Spanish) and Green's (English). For home brewers, you can get an enzyme from White Laboratories (USA) which will break down protein haze and has the happy side effect of breaking down gluten. I will be trying this out as soon as I source a lab that can accurately measure low level gluten, as I am a coeliac for nearly 60 years now, was one of the first or first ever diagnosed, still going strong, and an amateur home brewer, and qualified food scientist, biotechnologist and chemist. Will let you know how I get on, as I too cannot liver without a cold beer on a Friday evening.

  11. I have heard that the owner of Moonlight Brewing Co. Became celiac and switched all of his beers to GF beers bit never advertised that fact as he didn't want to scare people away. Might be tough to test though as they only sell kegs. Also HopDogma is all GF.

    1. Real reason is that advertising as gluten free and getting an occasional contaminated batch leads to legal liabilities.

  15. I have been gluten intolerant for 8 years. You have made my life so much better by bringing beer back into my life! Please test Landshark if you can. I enjoyed Corona Extra and Coors lite over the weekend. Not my favorites but sooooo much better than anything gluten free that I am in heaven! Keep up the exciting experimentation!

  16. Awesome site!! I have been celiac for 5 years Following your page for the last year. I also follow a similar page out of Germany ( There are several beers tested by both. Some with the same result but, several with contradictory results (Becks, Bud Light, Heineken, Miller Lite, Pilsner Urquell, Tsingtao). Any comments, possible explanations for these differences would be appreciated. THANKS for all your work.

    New Planet recently released two gluten reduced beers (think Omission) that are the best commercially available GR beers I've tried - an IPA and an Ale. They've posted test results on their website showing gluten content of less than 10 ppm. Seclusion IPA & Tread Lightly Ale, both are sold in cans only. (If you can find them) check them out, they are both very tasty.

  26. Thanks for the list. For any celiacs in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area, there is an excellent micro brewery in Brighton called Brewery Becker. All of their beers are deglutenized, and unlike most of these on the list, they all have some very bold know you are drinking real beer!

  27. Oh boy. Where to begin?
    While your reference to the FDA labeling rules is correct, what's left out is that current testing methods (such as the ones you used) CANNOT ACCURATELY DETECT GLUTEN LEVELS in fermented and hydrolyzed foods and drinks. Therefore, regardless of the test results on these beers, we actually don't know exactly how much gluten is left in them, and levels may vary widely.
    In fact, the FDA’s FALCPA (Food Allergy Labeling Consumer Protection Act) Guidance documents specifically note that
    “FDA is aware that sandwich ELISA methods [currently available testing] do not adequately detect gluten in fermented and hydrolyzed foods. Because scientifically valid methods currently are lacking that can do so, we intend to issue a proposed rule on this issue.”
    None of the beers listed above which you indicate test to below 20ppm are permitted to claim they are gluten free because such a claim cannot be proven.
    Fortunately, there are loads of NATURALLY gluten-free beers available now, made with GF grains and actually labeled GF. You can find one to suit nearly any taste, from microbrews to mainstream beers like Budweiser's Redbridge.

    If you have celiac disease, regardless of whether you feel like you can drink these gluten-reduced beers without effect, please do not do so. A pilot study by the University of Chicago and the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America concluded that celiacs do often react to these beers.     1. The Canadian food inspection agency also does not allow the term gluten free beer on a beer that is brewed from grains containing gluten as Jules mentioned about. This past year Estrella as well as a number of beers were removed from our liquor stores due to the violation in labelling law. A gluten removed beer or gluten reduce beer is not suitable for a celiac and any testing methods currently on the market to test the gluten content are not accurate or acceptable according to the Canadian food inspection agency. The gluten contents you posted are very misleading and should not be consumed by someone with Ceoliac disease.

  28. FWIW, Omission beers are tested by mass spectrometry for gluten content. This method is much more stringent method of testing for gluten, and can detect the fragments of harmful peptides in hydrolyzed solutions. Or so I have read.

    1. Actually they don't. If you go to Omissions website you can see the test style that they performed and the result of any batch they have tested.

      Omission uses the the RIDASCREEN® Gliadin competitive test, which appears to just be a much more expensive form of this same test. So it is probably more accurate too.
